Is there any official rule that says you are not allowed to order the dealer to pick up when you are void in that suit or is this just a house rule? I had a situation where it would have been worth getting set and giving up two points rather than risk the dealer picking up and going alone.

This has been answered before.

There is no requirement that you have to have a trump card to order the upcard going back 160 years in Hoyle and authored books on Euchre. However, sometimes there are House (local) rules that require a natural trump card to order (a dumb rule). If not indicated or printed out before you play do as you may. Especially at 9 to 6 or 7 and especially donate if you have nothing to call on 2nd round.

Best ref. is Dwight & Leeds from 1887 and still current on some modern Hoyle books on Euchre Rules. And The Professor (Meehan) 1862. Google on it! Or just open the Books here on OE.

Thanks for the reply. I will have to make sure everyone is aware of the Hoyle rule before I start a game.
