Ohio Euchre and weekly euchre games on worldofcardgames.com

Unread post by Dlan » Wed Nov 27, 2019 10:44 pm

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, but haven’t really looked into a way that would work for all our members. That is until now. What I’d like to set up is a weekly on-line euchre game where member of this forum could play against each other. Not to see who the better player is, but to give an opportunity to discuss the different hands that may crop up.
I have been in torch with Marya, the webmaster at worldofcardgames.com, discussing how this we could do this on her site. What interested me the most about world of card games was it has an option to set up private tables. It also has the option of downloading a hand after it has been played and seeing it replayed

For those that have never visited world of card games, it is many different game choices including euchre. It has great graphics with full screen capabilities and sign-up and use of the site is free.

I found the private table set up a little confusing but here Marya was very helpful. I will post a step by step in another post, but for now, I’d like to hear everyone’s thought on this and specifically what days/times would be best?

I think it's great. As long as there is an open chat for the room. Perhaps a last hand review. Maybe they can add features like that or its already there? Discussing hands right after what was played is key or even after the game. while its fresh. When I was playing on yahoo a lot. My partners and I used to always critique each other all the time. Plus having a last hand played helped to see immediate mistakes. Having kibitz or see other players hands as an observer was Invaluable.

Getting to play hands and see how hands come out is a great tool/teacher. Plus its really a great to fine tune ones game.

As of right now I"d Say Friday or Saturday but I lean towards Saturday. I am on West coast Time, Pacific.

I also like this idea.

I can't do 7-11 p.m. EST on Saturdays or Sundays. I have a prior engagement with my main gaming group. I could definitely do Friday though!

Hi all,

I'm Marya from World of Card Games.

I love this idea myself! I hope some of you will find the site enough fun that you'll want to play at public tables... we need more Euchre players! :) And if anyone gives me feedback on the bots, I will do my best to improve them.

There's a chat feature at the site. You can totally chat at tables. Some people go bonkers over "table talk", but as long as everyone at the table doesn't mind, you can discuss to your hearts' content. Here's a blog page about the chat feature:
https://worldofcardgames.blogspot.com/p/how-to-turn-off-chats-at-world-of-card.html

Here's a blog page about the hand history:
https://worldofcardgames.blogspot.com/2015/09/new-feature-download-euchre-hand-history.html
You can only download the hand history if you are registered at the site. Registration is free, and I don't use your email for anything nefarious - it's just taken so you can reset your password if needed. I try to push people to register because I think registered users are more recognizable and hopefully better behaved, but there are surely plenty of ill-behaved registered users (and wonderful guests, too!).

One caution: the hand histories were developed mainly to give you the opportunity to send them to me to report errors in the bots. I didn't think people would use them to discuss strategy during the game. If you want to view the hand history during a game, you will need to make sure that you open a browser in "incognito mode" and use that mode to view the history. You can't open the hand history while you are simultaneously playing a game in the same browser.

Oh also if you want to discuss strategy during the game, there's a pause button. The pause button is described here:
https://worldofcardgames.blogspot.com/2016/06/list-of-tables-updated-pause-button.html

There are lots of features at the site which may be a bit confusing at first, but I hope they are useful. There's a "post-game chat" table, described in this blog post:
https://worldofcardgames.blogspot.com/2015/11/new-features-chat-after-game-spades.html

You can meet at the Euchre chat lobby, and then go to your game when everyone arrives, if that helps. Here's the blog page on chat lobbies:
https://worldofcardgames.blogspot.com/2016/01/chat-lobbies-at-world-of-card-games.html

Be careful about disliking someone. If you dislike someone accidentally, they will be invisible to you - you'll never see them unless you remove the dislike. Here's a post on likes and dislikes:
http://worldofcardgames.blogspot.com/2015/08/likes-and-dislikes-at-world-of-card.html

Finally, here's a link to a post about the messaging feature
https://worldofcardgames.blogspot.com/2016/11/messaging.html
I know this forum doesn't allow using "real links", but I hope you'll understand why I'm posting the links to the blog. World of Card Games has many features, and I'd like people to be able to navigate them as easily as possible.

If anyone plays at the site and doesn't like something about it, I'd like to hear about it, too. I may not be able to help, but I always like to know what people want or don't want. There are times when someone reports an issue, and I can fix it quickly.

I'm the sole owner and developer at World of Card Games. Unfortunately, I can't afford to spend much time on the site these days, because I have other work I need to do. But I always try to fix things if there's a bug report. I hope that some day I'll be able to spend more time on the site again, and add more new features.

Feel free to email me - [email protected] - or make a comment here. I'll be following and I'll respond as best I can to any questions or comments.

Thanks and have fun!

Marya

Hi!

There's no ability to "kibitz" or see other players' cards in real time - you have to wait to download the hand history.

The sort-of hackish solution would be to play out the hand, then have everyone download the hand history, and open it in a private-mode browser. Then hit the pause button while discussing it.

I've only had a couple of people write and tell me they wanted to see games being played with all the cards displayed to everyone in real-time, like a "kibitz" mode. I had heard this was allowed at Yahoo, but I always wondered if lots of people would get upset about this because it seems like it would be so easy for people to cheat if all the cards were shown to anyone outside the table.

I'm interested to hear how it worked at Yahoo. I never played at Yahoo, and people sometimes tell me that they miss Yahoo. I don't think World of Card Games can compete with the old Yahoo; I'm just one developer. But I've tried to do what I can to add the in-demand features.

The kabitz option worked liked this. It is a table option. One that all 4 players at the table could check off, like an option. It was called "allow kabitz". Next to it a white empty box to check or leave blank. If players put the check Mark for allow kabitz. Then an observer could press the option bar named kabitz on the table. Whenever it was pressed by that person/observer then he or she could see the cards face up of whomever had chosen to allow kabitz or placed a check Mark in the white box for allow kabitz. Everyone else who had kabitz off. There cards would remain hidden.

DAN & ALL,

It will be difficult to find a time and day that satisfies all. I would think to accommodate the Mount time folks, have a time in the evening like 8 or 9 o'clock EST. Even 10 might be okay. So I would say the way to make this happen is put out three days with some times and let those interested say yea or nay. But if you say 'nay' to each, then you should have some alternatives days & times.

I would be favorable toward this idea, but not for constant interruptions during the game as it spoils continuity. But capturing the hand by those wanting to further discuss that particular hand, and then posting it for later discussion without dissing the the player(s). It would be up to the person(s) to capture the hand with all the cards before and during play, each trick. I am not for long discussions during play.

Just my input.

Tbolt65 / Edward - Thanks for the description of the kibitz option! It's a great idea. I wish I had time to add it. I do actually have this on my "some day" feature list, and I'll add your description of how it should work. But, I just don't know when I'll have the time.

Irishwolf,

Just wanted to say a couple things:
The hand history is downloaded as a file. Inside the file is a link - that link can be used to replay the hand at any time.

So if you share the link amongst yourselves, the strategy can be discussed later on. For example, someone could post it on this forum. Unfortunately, since you can't post links here, you'd have to copy the string and paste it into your browser address bar.

If anyone wants to try, there's a demo of the "replayer" URL below. You will see it's quite long. You copy the entire thing and paste it into the address bar of your browser. Remember not to do this while playing a game at the site. - Marya
PS the other thing is that "post-game" chat can be used to discuss strategy... but that may take some getting used to.

Oh wow that link that I pasted showed up as a real link - so you can click it and view the replayer, if you want! No copy/paste needed. I thought this forum disallowed URL posting. Hope it's okay that I did that. - Marya

Marya, No problem with posting the link. Live links was off to keep away spam. It was back turned on as I was playing around with ways to a post an image. My original thought was to post a screen shot of the hand. Actually, Posting both a screen shot and link could possibility be even better.

To that end, there is now an “upload images” box (or icon) that will open a new window. There you can drag in an image, then close the window. The image link will appear in your message.

Image

The simplest way to capture a screen image is to press the windows key and print screen key at the same time. This will save the image in ‘mycomputer > pictures > screenshots’ folder.

I will be starting a poll for day/time with plans of starting next week.

I got two games in. I was having technical difficulties. I switched computers. It helped but I am still not sure about the best way to enter a game at a private table.
