Could the West/East team save themself from being euchred?

Unread post by Dlan »

The images below were taken from a game onhttps://www.hardwoodgames.com/euchre/

The West seat dealt and turned up the ten of spades. North passes, and East orders the ten into their partner's hand. West then discards the ten of diamonds.

Image

The North starts the hand by leading the ace of hearts. Everyone follows suit, giving the North/South team a trick.

Next, North leads the ace of diamonds, East and South follow suit, but West trumps using the ten. This gives each team a trick.

Image

Now West leads the king of hearts. North trumps, by using their king, East throws off the king of clubs, and South gets rid of the queen of hearts, giving North/South their second trick.

Then North leads the queen of diamonds. East trumps with the queen, but South overtrumps using the left, taking the third trick for a euchre.

Could East/West have done anything different to save this hand?

East allowed the third trick to get through because he didn't want to "waste his bower" by overtrumping the King. It is possible they could get a trick if they simply take the third Trick. The Right is only good for one trick.

The seemed mistake in this situation is that west failed to trust his partner made a good call. After winning the second trick with his Ts, wests "BEST"(in the long run) play would have been to call out trump if he has another in his hand. Such a lead will usually weaken the opps by getting 2 of their trumps at once and setting up for your partner to win the point. If you follow that line of play, leading your trump on the third trick to your partners call you will get euchred much less as well as score 2 points more often in similar situations.

IMO, In the situation presented here by Dlan, East ordered with just mediocre hand strength, having only 2 trump and 3 week side suits, but the risk of getting euchred was exacerbated by wests failure to lead his ace third trick.

A trump third trick leadout would have gained the point for E + W. even with the weak trump strength they held. Alternate leads such as what west led in this sample, will in the long run, throw points away.

West the dealer played the hand badly. He/she should have led the AS on trick 3 instead of putting his partner (east) in a bind with a 2nd lead of hearts.

But since West led the KH on trick 3, you better use the JS over trumping then lead KC on trick 4 (knowing AS 9S JC) are unknown to East (S2).

Back to West leading on trick 3: Why put your partner in a bind by lead Hearts? Even a club leads gets a point for E/W as a second, weaker lead. East already played a H & D, reasonably he should be void in clubs. But don't guess, he east might even have three spades. lead the AS as he ordered and responsible for winning 2 tricks. You don't assist knowing you can only win one trick. IF IN DOUBT LEAD TO THE MAKER OF TRUMP.

Did East (S2) order too thin? Questionable order, yes since he had all suits blocked but he's weak if all pass first round. Blocking is not scoring so better chance to score a point in Spades.
