Time limits

I am helping to run a caual reoccuring tournament. It is pretty small right now (30ish people) and the first 2 went pretty well. However, at this last event, we had 1 person who was taking their sweet time. Talking too much (we encourage some socialization but not to delay play). We do rotate partners and opponants. But what would be an appropriate time limit to set per game? We plan on 8 games but had to cut it very short last time because of the delays. We would like to start off with the time limit being known ahead so that everyone is clear on the rules.

Tough question but I suggest you should be able to play 10 games (to 10 pts) in 3 hrs. That's 18 minutes a game that includes moving from table to table and dealing. That's max, IMO. If singles tournament you need to have a time limit, 2 deals each player and can still have a time limit too.

Some tournaments are 12 minutes a game and whatever the score is at 12 minutes is final unless tied then one more hand to determine the winner. Move on rotate. In this format you have to have a person as a Timer. It forces players to move quickly, deal and play fast but keeps everything moving. However, that all depends on the experience as new players are slow. All depends on your group - you could throw it up for majority vote.
