There are plenty of times one should trump their partner's ace but THIS IS NOT one of those times. In fact if one could pick the worst time to trump their P's ace this spot would be a candidate.

S3 is about to pick up the first 2 tricks, and with the lead in the wrong spot and the maker in a hard squeeze any time S3 leads a non-fresh suit on 3rd street we are now in prime euchring territory! But instead S1--apparently working as a secret agent for the other team--trumps S3's Ace on 2nd street preventing a squeeze play from ever happening and now putting the lead right where the maker wants it, to his Left. S1 trumping his P's ace effectively nuclear bombed any chance his team had of a euchre.

Now if you look at the actual hand S1-S3's team weren't going to get the euchre no matter how this played out becuz S2 had the right cards to stop it, but that won't usually be the case. Based on S2's overall range, S1 made a very costly mistake here.

I have to agree with Wes. Trumping that Ace made zero sense. South should have thrown off the Queen of Hearts. If his partner is skilled, North would have assumed that meant that his partner had at least another heart, possibly the boss.

Since the maker did follow suit on the Next Ace and on the Diamonds lead, South has to know that the maker's void is in hearts! Leading a heart ace is just asking to be trumped.

If South would have thrown off the queen, then that would have let North know to lead a heart if possible. That's setting up his partner to overtrump the maker since everybody knows that the maker's void is in hearts.
