What does "Green" Refer to in the Euchre Tips?

Unread post by Hiredgun » Wed Feb 23, 2022 9:02 pm

I saw the term "Green" and don't know what it means. Early on, in the Tips, it appears the author is defining a Green Ace as an Ace that is the same Color as the Trump suit, but not the Trump suit. For instance, if Trump is Spades then the Green Ace would be the Ace of Spades.

But then on another page, he gives a visual example, talking about a Green Ace. The Trump Suit is Clubs and the Ace in the Picture is the Ace of Hearts.

Would really appreciate it if someone could clarify. Thanks!

A green card is a card in the opposite color as trump. So if spades is trump then the (Card_A-D) (Card_A-H) would both be green aces.

This is important when it comes to considering what card to lead. The green suits have six cards in a suit, trump has seven. Next (the same color as trump but not the trump suit) only has 5 because the jack switches suits. Thus, it's pretty likely that at least one other player is going to have a void in next if you have more than one.

You can find Euchre terms on this website:
Find the tabs at the top of every page and…
Click on Euchre Rules
Click on “Complete List of Euchre Terms”
Scroll down to Green Suits
Click Expand to see the definition.

Here is the link, just in case, you have trouble locating “Euchre Terms”:

Thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, I notice the author of TIPS does not use the term "Green Aces" consistently.

For example, under the Tips: "NEVER lead trump on defense, page 5", it is titled: "Holding one trump with two green aces". But then, when we go down to the key hand, the player (at West) is holding and Ace in Trump and an Ace of Diamonds and Ace of Clubs. Clearly, he is holding 2 off-suit aces and NOT 2 green aces.

The inconsistency can be very confusing!!!!

I agree, the title is incorrect and misleading. The body of the tip correctly states that West had 2 Off Suit Aces.

Dlan, please review.
