Saving only your highest cards may not be the best way

Saving only your highest cards may not be the best way

Unread post by Dlan » Tue Dec 21, 2021 9:31 pm

I'm showing this hand because last week I watched someone that was trying to teach euchre to another. Their suggestion was to call trump and discard the 9 of clubs.

This was just the wrong move on so many levels

Think about what happens if 1 seat leads a club and your partner trump in. Your ace is wasted.

It is unlikely that the king of clubs will ever win a trick.
If you were to discard the king you'd create a void that you could trump.

This is the type of hand where you should be trying a lone call.

Remember winning at euchre involves a little bit of planning ahead.

OE (Ohio Euchre) is here to teach you Euchre.

The basics of discarding are here:

https://ohioeuchre.com/L-Learn_To_Play_ ... iscard.php

The first guidance is:
“As a general rule, you should first try and create a void in your hand.”

In this hand, discarding the Ks, is the easily discerned, correct discard, based on this basic general rule.

You now have 2 voids. 2 Voids are powerful! You have 3 trump to take advantage of the 2 Voids!

Dlan points out, that with the hand he posted, Dealer should order Alone. Dealer has an opportunity to gain 4 points! Go for it! 4 points is 40% of the points needed to win the game. Winning the game is the goal.

Improve your Euchre game. Click on “Euchre Lessons,” at the top of this page. Read the lessons, for a solid understanding of the basic principals. In just a short period of time, your Euchre game skills will improve dramatically. Reading through, Going Alone, will earn you 4 points, much more frequently. You will enjoy Euchre much more, by earning 4 points, in a single hand!

Great post, Richardb02

Euchre, an enjoyable game, becomes even more enjoyable once you understand the basics.
