Las Vegas Euchre Tournament

Unread post by Wes (aka the legend) » Fri Jun 15, 2018 3:49 pm

Where: A board game/cafe place called Meepleville. 4704 W. Sahara
Las Vegas, NV 89117

Sometimes the location changes. This website will always let you know where it's currently at: http://www.vegaseuchre.com/

When: Every Thursday 7:30pm sharp. Come early (between 7 or 7:15) so they have time to get you checked in. The tournament ends around 10 to 10:30.

Format: It's a $20 buy in. You play 6 games, each up to 10-13 points. The person who has the most points in the end gets first place. Other places pay out too, sometimes up to 7th place depending on how many people show up.

Whenever you guys book a vacation to Vegas, make sure to include a Thursday in your trip, and make sure to join this tournament! It's real fun and the people are very nice too.

Wes,

Are you rules that you have to have a "natural trump" to order the upcard?

A 20th century modification of standard rules. Ruins the donate and the strategy of the game.

You can order trump without any trump in your hand. For awhile I was the only one in the tournament who donated. People just looked at me like I was crazy. But I've seen two other guys do it now. It's catching on at a glacial pace altho I wish it wouldn't catch on at all:-)

The one rule of the tournament that I hate is if you get euchred on a loner the other team gets 4 points instead of the standard 2. That takes a lot of gamble out of loners, forces experts to play more like amateurs, and obviously makes comebacks harder. E.G. if you're down 6-0 can you really call a loose loner when you lose the game if it backfires? I'm not exactly sure how this affects donating strategy. Obviously people will tend to go alone with a tighter range and thus we should donate less, but that's about all I know on that.

Either way, it's a very fun tournament. If you ever go let me know!

Having a rule that if you get euchred on a loner the opposing team playing, score 4 points is as bad as not allowing "donates'. You lose strategy of going alone on marginal hands. That's a sissy's rule, because you only have to win three tricks. Makes the game too conservative (so here is an example where one might go alone but not under that rule Left, ace 10 with K + low trailer off suit. You can get euchred on that hand a high percentage but also make a lone as well. Those two are local house rule not supported by standard rules of Leeds & Dewight 1888 and other standard Hoyle rules. Of course, both variants impact strategy.

Another bad rule that has filtered into Euchre is how some Canadians play that if the dealer partner assists, he has to go alone. That too has no historical support. Another variant that ruins the strategy of the game.

Yeah it sux man. I've talked to the people running the tournament about how horrible the 4 point loss rule is. They won't budge. Still it's the only game in town, and it's a fun and cheap way to pass the time if you ever come to Vegas.

Yeah I've heard of that Canadian rule. That's also crazy. That said, I don't really care about tradition so the fact that these rules aren't the same as the original version doesn't really irk me. What does annoy me--extremely--is that these rule changes (the Vegas version or the Canadian version) clearly and objectively make the game less fun. Why would anyone wanna do that!!?? Makes no sense man.

That rule reduces the game to almost luck because you have to be idiotically conservative. No room for aggressive comebacks, etc. The only time that rule makes sense is when defending alone. That's another optional rule where you can opt to play without your partner on defense. Basically, if you can euchre the maker without your partner, then you get four points instead of the standard two.

Yes it's a crappy rule that actually ruins the game, but still, if you're in Vegas you might as well show up! It's still fun and better than losing hundreds/hr in a casino! :)

I'll show up if I'm in Vegas. For $20, why not?
