Preliminary Comments & Questions...

I know comments on the Main Quiz page prior to May 16 were moved to its own section. What happened to all the comments from May 16 - May 27. I had posted the following very recently and which I saw posted on that page earlier today, but I don’t find it anywhere? I had saved my message and am copy pasting it here. Hope someone will respond to it.

Hello,

First of all, thanks for having this site. After playing off and on for about 10 years, I managed to only get 68% on the quiz! :-(

Some preliminary non-question specific inquiries/comments:

1. Are the “Standard Euchre Rules” posted on this site actually documented in a standard book of euchre (by Hoyle?). I like the rules you posted, but experience variations at different tournaments, which can be hard to remember. Some don’t even make sense.

2. The quiz is based on the standard 10 point (or at most 13 point) game, correct? I assume this is the case, since the questions usually (or always?) begin with stating the scores. I realized that this affects the answer... Since some players may have more (recent) experience with playing 2 rounds (or 8 hands per game) with no limit to how much can be scored, do you think it might be helpful to point out the scoring standard from the start?

3. I know that the correct answers are based on consensus opinion from experts (extremely valuable), and I presume these opinions are provable to support the highest percent favorable outcome. But is there a book somewhere that explicitly calculates the mathematical probabilities for different scenarios or at least discusses them mathematically?

Thanks,
Ashis

The comments from those dates general interest were moved tohttp://ohioeuchre.com/Test-Your-Euchre- ... ments3.php Your comments were not included because I had sent you a private email asking you to post here.

Your score of 68 shows you have a good understanding of euchre. I looked at your test results. I’m not going to go over them. But, I can offer some insight to question 14. Your partner turned down red. Chances are he’s holding black cards. It’s hard to make points when you pass. Let’s look at the other three options. Hearts? You only have one and either bower could take it. [ also there is a guideline of the opposite color from what your partner, the dealer, turns down ] Clubs? Maybe, but again you only have 1. Who has the other six. Spades? Here you would have two trump. That leaves five in the wild. If you used one trump, you’d still have one and a way back into the hand if you lost the lead.

1) One of the biggest problems with euchre is the lack of a standard set of rules. You have to ask at each new venue. These different rule sets distract from the game. It was clear that a standard had to be set. The rules provided here are based on rules used by Joe Andrews in the World Series of Euchre, as well as the North American Euchre Showdown (that I ran). They are designed to work at a major event and still work at the kitchen table.

2) I have changed the wording on the quiz to indicate it’s based on a 10’s game

3) I do not know of a book out yet. There is one in the works by a member of this board. I don’t have a publish date, Once it is released, there will be a notice here.

Thank you very much! I spoke with Joe Andrews recently. He said he might do a reunion World Series Grand Prix tournament of Euchre (& Hearts?) in late 2018 or early 2019. Would his venue be even bigger, since it’s the “World” (includes people from the continent of Antarctica), whereas yours was only from the continent of “North America” (including only the USA, Canada & Mexico)? Will you have YOUR tournament again? Do you know the approximate attendance no’s. for these 2 venues?

 It would be nice to see Joe hold another tourney. He did a good job of running them. The 2011-2013 events had about 25 tables. As for me holding another, probably not. For the last few years I’ve been keeping honeybees. Between the bees, this website and daily chores I have enough going on.

 Also, after you asking about a list of euchre tournaments, I have decided to add a spot here. Any one listing an event would be expected to keep it current.
